The Poneva Project

A page covering my Poneva Project to the point it is at has been added. Here you will find some examples of poneva in the Moscow Museum collections, a tutorial of how to wrap a three panel poneva as well as how to cut and construct a three panel poneva of your own. I learned a lot after entering this project into North Oaken A&S Last year. I did qualify for Kingdom, but due to my health I wasn't able to get myself or my entry to the event. Looking back, I realized I am iterating this project quite well. If you look at my original Poneva wrapping tutorial that's machine made 100% wool. This iteration is hand woven 100% wool, but machine fulled for durability and utility. Because the poneva is an every day garment, I want to prove that it can be made easily by a home weaver on a loom, so I'm learning the skills necessary to pull this off. Not for an entry, but for my own gratification...as well as to demonstrate how garb can be iterated to look more period as p

Time to dive in a different pool - the Alanic Culture, 7-9th c

Current world events are shaping a lot of things right now, and that includes access to reference material. For the time being while my heart is incredibly sad for the people of Ukraine, I am turning my eyes to the Alanic Culture, which is early period (7 to 9th c), and returning to getting my rapier gear into shape. The main inspiration is from this Mini Kaftan in the Hermitage, Moschevaya Balka, the Senmurv Kaftan, and the collection of Alanic material at the Met. I do have some silk printing planned for the interior of the garment, stamp commissioned and on its way. Did I mention the Alanic collection at the met also includes textile equipment? Weaving goodies? No? There will be more geeking on this later as I swim deeper into the pool.

13th Century Spanish Pillow Pinkeep

A little holiday gift for my fellow Midrealm Embroidery Guild members (especially those who haven't paneled in counted thread yet) the extant piece is housed in the collection at the Patrimonio Nacional in Madrid. It was part of a 2014 Exhibition, the photos of which are no longer available online. This chart is based on an extant historical item from 13th C Spain. The original was stitched in silk, on linen measuring 25 inches x 19 inches (65x50cm) and is a pillow case. Madrid PALACIO REAL-TEJIDOS ALMOHADA DE SAN FERNANDO. 65 X 50 CM. TISSUE OF THE 13TH CENTURY EMBROIDERED IN SILK The chart I have created is a miniature of the original and measures roughly 5" x 3" when completed and will make a lovely little pin cushion if stitched on 28 count as suggested.
