Research tips - getting the fluff out of the results

I find I am often asked what terms I use when I search online for a subject. One of the most useful tools I have found is appending a simple little line to my search results.

-site:pinterest.*

This takes all of those Pinterest results off the top of your search results and lets more salient information appear first.

Another tip is putting specific terms in quotations, such as "name of specific thing" -site:pinterest.*

The * is a wildcard so whether it's Pinterest.com, .eu, .ru, .au, etc. all of those are filtered out.

Pinterest does serve a purpose, it's a good place to find interesting things, but IMO it's very much a caveat emptor tool. I like to be able to find the original home of an image placed there and sometimes that is a search in and of itself.

One more little tip: find terms for what you are looking for in the native language of it's home.

If I am looking at a Russian collection for example, I will search "vyshivka", which may net me better results as well. That word means four different things, however: embroidery, fancywork, purl. So I might choose another term if I want something more specific or am not getting the results I am after in the results. I hope you get the idea though.
